St. Croix Environmental Association closed out 2018 on a very positive note! We had nearly 20 volunteers at our native tree planting at Southgate Coastal Reserve, including 10 youth from FYR is LIT (Fueling Youth Reading Leaders in Training). (Pictured above: FYR is LIT participants plant native trees at Southgate Coastal Reserve).
We met with the kids on Friday to lead them through activities about the importance of wetlands and how trees are a valuable part of healthy wetlands. At the planting, a handful of participants stayed an hour past the scheduled stop time and even wanted to keep going. They are a truly inspiring group and SEA is ready to move in to 2019 with their energy and gusto!
FYR (Fuleing Youth Reading) is LIT (Leaders in Training) empowers older students (high school and college) to work with elementary school students while also refining their own literacy and leadership skills. In its third year, the theme of this year’s program is Environmental Awareness and Sustainability. SEA will be working with program participants and leaders to develop and lead activities that develop literacy and leadership skills while promoting environmental awareness.
