The mission of the St. Croix Environmental Association (SEA) is to conserve, educate and advocate for the wellbeing of the environment to enhance the quality of life throughout the community of St. Croix. The Executive Director (ED) will serve as the principal staff officer of SEA, who will help fulfill this important undertaking. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the ED will oversee the strategic and operational efficiency of our programs, property, and staff. The incumbent will pursue funding to support conservation properties, education programs, and advocacy endeavors, as well as general headquarters needs.


Applicants must have a strong understanding of Caribbean environmental issues, experience in project coordination, fundraising, and financial management. Web and social media management, and public speaking experience are desirable. Starting salary is $60 - $65k depending on experience. Benefits include health insurance, paid holidays, and PTO.


SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:


Leadership and Vision (20%) - The ED will lead with vision-focused intent, be efficient in implementation and welcoming to collaborations that will help to carry out SEA’s mission. The ED will foster relationships with community, staff, donors, and Board to support the betterment of St. Croix’s environment and people.

  • Stays well informed about current environmental issues affecting St. Croix and acts as a spokesperson.

  • Actively communicates SEA’s vision, mission, projects, and programs to the public and interested parties.

  • Manages the message and content of SEA newsletters, web site, other communications and contacts with the press with input from Board and staff.

  • Assures that sound working relationships are developed and maintained with other relevant community groups.

  • Communicates internal and external issues affecting SEA to the Board.

  • Is engaged in organizational strategic planning with Board and staff and updates that plan as directed by the Board.

  • Oversees the implementation and achievement of the strategic plan.

  • Provide expertise with the Board when asked to review or comment on official business or documents, such as CZM applications.


Program Oversight & Development (50%) - The ED will develop, enhance and oversee our projects and programs. The ED will also seek short and long-term financial support for conservation, education and advocacy programs and projects that are in line with the mission of the organization.

  • Develops new projects that are in line with SEA’s mission and oversees existing projects.

  • Seeks RFPs, writes grant proposals, complies with grantor requirements and implements projects. Assures timely submission of applications and reports.

  • Disseminates information from our conservation, education and advocacy projects and programs to the public, Board and appropriate agencies, through education efforts, outreach materials, reports and events.

  • Oversees the implementation of all educational programs. Some programs will require contractual coordination, as budget allows, others will be directly implemented by the ED.

  • Offer education and interpretive programs to all ages that are responsive to the interests of the general public, specific interest groups, and in keeping with SEA’s mission.

  • Ensures that SEA’s programs and projects carry out the strategic plan, consider community needs and address environmental issues.


Property Oversight & Management (15%) - The ED will manage the maintenance and conservation needs of our three properties: Southgate Coastal Reserve, the Barren Spot Bat Tower, and Hermon Hill. The ED will seek funds to help support maintenance and conservation practices at these properties.

  • Oversees all activities related to general maintenance and best practices in conservation & development at each property, including trail, bush and facility needs.

  • Manages property and facilities upkeep in a manner that allows for public enjoyment with minimal ecological footprint.

  • Manages new and existing development to support ecological health as well as program/project needs.

  • Manages the monitoring of terrestrial and aquatic environmental conditions.

  • Provides diligent record keeping of species and environmental conditions for regular reports and communications to the Board, public, and interested parties.

  • Reports any vandalism or issues to the Board and relevant parties, i.e., police, fire department, etc.

  • Implements proposed course of actions when facing such issues at the properties.

  • Ensures property taxes, insurance and financial support are in place for adequate property management.


Staff Management (15%) - The ED will serve as the primary liaison between the staff, contractors and the Board. The ED will be responsible for managing and hiring staff and contractors to carry out our conservation, education and advocacy needs.

  • Hires and supervises staff and contractors, as needed with Board approval.

  • Encourages and fosters staff communication.

  • Maintains staff productivity, esprit de corps, and job satisfaction.

  • Helps prepare staff evaluations.

  • Prepares (with staff input) an annual budget for Board approval, monitors SEA’s financial condition and ensures that SEA has sound fiscal management.

  • Assures maintenance of official records and compliance with all federal and local requirements.

  • Oversees management of SEA’s office and equipment.
