Updated: Apr 25, 2023

Happy Earth Month! 🌎

We’re kicking off Earth Month with a fun craft project — an upcycled DIY bird feeder.

You’ll Need:

  1. A plastic bottle — choose a bottle from your recycling bin, like a water, soda, juice or other type of plastic bottle.

  2. A Sharpie

  3. An Exacto knife and pair of scissors — please be careful!

  4. 2 perches — you may use wooden spoons, unsharpened pencils, chopsticks or even sticks from your yard.

  5. Glue

  6. String or twine

  7. Bird seed

  8. A love for backyard bird watching!

When and Where to Feed Birds

Feeding birds is most helpful when birds need extra energy, like during temperature extremes, migration, or when natural seed sources are depleted. In the Virgin Islands and other places affected by hurricanes, feeding birds is especially helpful after a storm when food sources are completely wiped out.

It’s important to feed birds where they will feel safe from predators. Predators of small birds in the Virgin Islands include feral or free-roaming cats, mongoose, and larger birds.

Best types of bird food:

  1. Black-oil sunflower seed

  2. Millet

  3. Cracked corn

  4. Bird seed blends

  5. Baked and crushed eggshells

Do NOT feed birds:

  1. Bread

  2. Table scraps

  3. Chocolate

Thank you to Q Studio and GlobalGiving for your support in this project!
