SEA Education Programs

Youth Education

Children have long been the focus of SEA's education program. Using age-appropriate environmental learning modules, SEA's educators deliver those programs to nearly 2,000 elementary school children every year through visits to public schools, special programs such as Eco-Fair, and through SEA's summer programs provided in cooperation with the many summer camps scheduled throughout the island.

For over twelve years, SEA has been the lead organization in sponsoring the Eco-Fair to coincide with the annual Earth Day celebration. Geared for school age kids, governmental agencies and organizations from all over the island give presentations, offer tours of the St George Village Botanical Gardens and give kids up to date information about how they can make St. Croix a cleaner and healthier place to call home.

In 2007, a generous gift from a donor enabled SEA to sponsor snorkel trips to Buck Island for public school children, and in 2008 shore-based snorkel clinics provided in conjunction with the International Year of the Reef initiative. All of these educational programs are aimed at enhancing awareness among young people of the very special environment in which they live.

Environmental Learning Lab

The idea for the mobile Environmental Learning Lab came as a result of seeing the need for public school educators to have better access to science demonstration and observation equipment. The Environmental Learning Lab is equipped with microscopes, biological sampling tools, reference books and prepared modules on all sorts of important environmental topics that apply to our island.

The van also serves as a wonderful roving bill board for our organization. Large brilliant and colorful photographs, donated by acclaimed underwater photographer, Dr. Kasey Canton, are displayed on the sides, along with our mission statement and the SEA logo.

Adult Education

SEA has always sponsored educational events for adults aimed at enhancing environmental awareness. See our events calendar for a listing of current programs.

In addition, SEA is expanding its outreach and trying new techniques to provide important information to larger audiences of adults on selected priority environmental topics.
